About this Project

Overview

This project involved the fabrication and installation of a structural steel canopy and roof extension at a live Woolworths shopping precinct. The works aimed to modernise and expand the existing frontage, while improving protection for customers and equipment from the elements.

Scope of Works

  • Fabrication of 9 tonnes of structural steel, including custom trusses and box columns
  • Hot-dip galvanising of all steel for durability and corrosion resistance
  • Onsite erection of the steel structure around live pedestrian and customer areas
  • Coordination with concrete, electrical, and roofing contractors to maintain timeline continuity
  • Supply and install of box guttering and downpipe supports as per Woolworths’ national specification

Difficulties

  • Live Site Management: All works occurred in a live Woolworths car park, requiring strict traffic management and scheduling to avoid customer disruption.
  • Weather Interruptions: Rain and wind caused intermittent access delays, requiring rapid schedule adjustments.
  • Tight Timeframe: With trades queued and client handover deadlines set, fabrication and install needed to be completed with minimal float.
  • Access Constraints: Due to existing structures and underground services, lifting equipment had to be carefully planned and deployed.

Outcomes

  • Project delivered on time and within the specified tolerance
  • Zero incidents onsite despite operating in a high-traffic area
  • All QA/QC documents submitted and accepted by Woolworths’ compliance team
  • Client reported strong satisfaction with finish, install coordination, and communication
