SUEZ Optical Sorter
- Location: Bibra Lake, Western Australia
Client: SUEZ Recycling & Recovery
Tonnage: 26 Tonnes
Project Type: Optical Sorter Installation – Plant Upgrade
About this Project
Overview
Westfab Welding was contracted by SUEZ Recycling & Recovery to fabricate and install 26 tonnes of structural steelwork for the upgrade of their optical sorting line at the Bibra Lake recycling facility. The project focused on integrating a new high-speed optical sorter system into an existing materials recovery plant—requiring precision-engineered supports, walkways, and gantries to accommodate complex conveyor and sensor equipment.
Scope of Work
- Fabrication of steel platforms, gantries, and structural supports
- Pre-coating of all walking surfaces in high-visibility safety green for slip resistance and compliance
- Installation of elevated steelwork and overhanging supports for optical sorting machinery
- Conveyor interface framing and sensor mounting points integrated into structure
- On-site bolt-up and welding in and around active processing lines
- All work completed to AS/NZS 1554 welding standards, with QA documentation and signoff
Key Challenges
The plant remained partially operational during installation, requiring:
- Tight coordination with SUEZ site supervisors
- Work within confined, overhead spaces above conveyors and balers
- Millimetre-accurate fabrication to ensure compatibility with imported sorting equipment
- Safety-first approach in a busy facility with multiple contractors on-site
Westfab prefabricated major components off-site and completed on-site welding and bolt-up after hours and during designated shutdown windows—ensuring minimal disruption to SUEZ operations.
Outcome
Westfab delivered the steelwork install safely, on schedule, and to exact specifications, allowing SUEZ to bring their optical sorting upgrade online without delay. The structural components we supplied now support one of WA’s most advanced recycling systems, improving throughput and material recovery accuracy.
This project highlights Westfab’s ability to deliver precision fabrication and complex installation work in active industrial settings—with minimal disruption and maximum reliability.
