Mandurah Bridge Spud Beams
- Tonnage: 14 Tonnes
- Client: Georgiou Group
- Project Type: Custom Fabrication
- Location: Mandurah, Western Australia
About this Project
OVERVIEW
This project involved the custom fabrication of two large spud beams designed for marine deployment as part of the infrastructure upgrade near the Mandurah Bridge. These beams play a critical role in anchoring temporary piling rigs and equipment used in overwater construction.
Constructed in-house at our Westfab facility, these units were fully fabricated, welded, and prepared for immediate transportation and installation.
SCOPE
- Fabrication of two spud beams to precise engineering specifications
- Use of heavy-duty circular pipe with reinforced base and top plates
- Multi-pass welding for strength and durability
- Full weld testing and inspection
- Primer coating and preparation for harsh marine exposure
CHALLENGES
- Tight tolerances: Each unit required exact alignment between mounting flanges and structural pipework.
- Weight and manoeuvrability: Each beam was approximately 7 tonnes, requiring precise material handling inside the workshop.
- Welding accuracy: Due to the forces exerted on spud beams during operation, welding had to be executed to a high structural standard with no margin for error.
- Delivery coordination: Logistics for transporting and craning the finished beams out of the workshop required tight scheduling to avoid delays to the client’s piling operation.
OUTCOME
The finished spud beams were delivered on time and to specification, ready for integration into marine construction works. The client praised the workmanship and welding detail, noting the smooth turnaround and responsive communication throughout the process.
This project demonstrated Westfab’s capability to deliver high-integrity custom fabrication for infrastructure projects requiring heavy-duty, high-performance components.
